Jian Zhan bowls have been made in the Jianyang district of Fujian since the Song Dynasty, and were prized by emperors, scholars and monks for the tea ceremony. 
 
What gives each bowl its character is the glaze. The same glaze goes into every kiln, but differences in temperature and position mean every piece emerges with a completely unique surface. The purple and rose iridescence on this bowl is a natural result of that process, not something that can be planned or repeated. 
 
The clay is high in iron, fired at high temperature, with a dense and weighty feel in the hand. Made in Jianyang, Fujian, the original home of Jian Zhan.
